Bobbi Kristina isn't the only one who has a problem with Lifetime's upcoming Whitney Houston biopic. The late superstar's mom, Cissy Houston, also objects, and pleaded Tuesday, July 22, for the network to just let her daughter rest in peace.
"Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family's objections," Cissy, 80, told Entertainment Tonight of the made-for-TV film, I Will Always Love You: The Whitney Houston Story. "No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby [Brown]."
(The movie, starring Yaya DeCosta and directed by Houston's former Waiting to Exhale costar Angela Bassett, revolves around the legendary singer's tumultuous romance with Brown, with whom she had daughter Bobbi Kristina. The couple's 15-year marriage was also documented on their Bravo reality show Being Bobby Brown in 2005.)
"In the two years since Whitney's death [in 2012], many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her," Cissy continued. "I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn't know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please please let her rest."
Bassett, for her part, told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview that she had reached out to Houston's family about the movie. She also said she had read Cissy Houston's book for inspiration.
"We reached out to them in the early days; of course we're not going to do the movie and not say anything to them," Bassett told EW. "We paid our respects and let the conversation be had, just to get their okay. They certainly could have been not involved and against it."
