Meriam Ibrahim Finally Speaks About Escaping Death Sentence In Sudan

For the first time since being sentenced to death by hanging for being a Christian, the Sudanese mother that made international headlines is speaking about her horrific ordeal — and how she knew her faith would eventually save her and her family.

Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, 27, is an inspiration to women everywhere after what she has been through. Once living in a prison cell awaiting death, the mother of two is free once again and has been reunited with her husband, Daniel Wani. Now, she is speaking out for the first time about what she and her children have been through as they shared a tiny prison cell, and how she managed to stay strong despite what once seemed like a dreadful outcome.

For the first time since a Sudanese court locked her into a tiny prison cell with her toddler son when she was just 8 months pregnant, Meriam is opening up about her struggle.

When a Sudanese court asked Meriam to renounce her Christianity and reclaim her Muslim heritage, she refused. Now, Meriam reveals that she found the strength to take a stand against the government in the religion she so proudly proclaimed as her own.

“Thanks to God we are all fine. I trusted God from the first instant. I knew that he would not abandon me,” the mother of two told the Daily Mail.

“Even when they condemned me to death I never thought of renouncing my religion. When I was asked to renounce my religion I knew what I was risking. But I didn’t want to do it.”

Meriam is a hero, not only to religious advocates everywhere but, more importantly, to her children. Because of her strength and her beliefs, Meriam and her two children will finally be able to travel back to America with her husband, Daniel, to start a better life together.

During her interview, Meriam was asked about Sudan and whether or not she ever had plans to return. Unfortunately, she is still considered a convict there and would be in grave danger if she ever returned.

“I will never go back. My family wouldn’t let me,” she explained, referring to her husband and children.

In Sudan there is a man claiming to be Meriam’s brother, even though they have never met. While he is the biological son of Meriam’s father, she claims her father abandoned her and her mother when she was a baby which is why her mother decided to raise her as a Christian.

Thanks to her lawyer’s appeal and the help of the Italian government who chartered a jet to Sudan to fly Meriam and her family out of the country as soon as possible, she will never have to face the perils of a Sudanese prison cell ever again.
