Robin Williams’ Daughter, Zelda Breaks Her Social-Media Silence Since Bully After Her Father's Death.
Zelda, daughter of late legendary actor Robin Williams, is back on social media, and she has a message for the bullies who forced her to ditch the Internet following her father’s suicide last month.
“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim,” she posted on her Tumblr account, a quote she borrowed from actor Harvey Fierstein, who starred in “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Death to Smoochey” with her late dad.
“Accept no ones definition of your life; define yourself,” the quote continued.
On Aug. 12, just days after the shocking news of her father’s suicide, 25-year-old Zelda announced she was leaving the Twitterverse and Instagram after Internet trolls sent her graphic images and cruel comments pertaining to Williams’ death.
“I’m sorry. I should’ve risen above,” she wrote on Aug. 13. “Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye.”
Zelda’s public outing of the bullies caused Twitter to reconsider its policies related to privacy and cyberbulling.
“We will not tolerate abuse of this nature on Twitter,” Del Harvey, Twitter’s vice president of trust and safety, said in a statement. “We have suspended a number of accounts related to this issue for violating our rules and we are in the process of evaluating how we can further improve our policies to better handle tragic situations like this one.”
Williams hanged himself in his California home on Aug. 11.
The 63-year-old comedic genius was struggling with extreme depression following the news that he was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, according to a statement from his wife.
