'Admit your mistakes' - Wenger under fire from major shareholder

Arsenal’s leading shareholder Alisher Usmanov has given a candid interview to CNBC about the current form of the Gunners.

The Russian billionaire has highlighted the problems he feels are blighting Arsene Wenger’s team, and he did not hold back, saying, “My opinion – and I tell it openly – we need to strengthen every position to play on the level of such teams…as Chelsea and Manchester City.”

Arsenal saw their worrying form continue when they lost 2-1 to Manchester United on Saturday, a result that saw them drop to eighth in the Premier League.

Wenger’s side are now without a win in three, having also lost to Swansea City and drawn with Anderlecht after throwing away a 3-0 lead; and the French manager was also the focus of Usmanov’s latest comments.

“He is one of the greatest coaches, not just of European, but of world football,” Usmanov said. “But we have a Russian proverb which goes: ‘Even an old lady can have a roof falling on her’.”

The billionaire appeared to suggest that both Wenger and his side needed to accept their mistakes if they are going to move forward this season and beyond.

“It’s only when you admit your mistakes that you can get rid of them,” he said. But it remains to be seen if those alleged mistakes will be accepted and learnt from soon enough for Arsenal to turn this season round.
